What is being closed for refurbishment at Disney World this year?

Disney World may have experienced a bit of a setback this year, but in true Disney fashion, the theme park will be back and stronger than ever before you know it. In fact, visitors are sure to see several changes to the park next time they visit, depending on when they choose to take their next vacation.

Let’s call 2020 the year of Disney World refurbishment. There are plans in place to enhance the park overall, which will include both refurbishments and some closing attractions. Let’s take a look at the attractions that will be refurbished and the ones that will be shutting down, in addition to how you can get the most out of your trip.

Attractions Being Refurbished This Year

Several Disney World refurbishment plans have been made that were originally scheduled to end anywhere from March of this year all the way until 2022. Here’s a quick list:

  • Kali River Rapids (Animal Kingdom)
  • Swiss Family Robinson Tree-house (Magic Kingdom)
  • Walt Disney World Railroad (Magic Kingdom)
  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (Magic Kingdom)
  • Spaceship Earth (Epcot)
  • Typhoon Lagoon (Water Parks)

Disney World Closures You Can Expect

In addition to the refurbishments listed above, several Disney World attractions are permanently ending this year, plus one seasonal closing.

Here are the ones on the roster:

  • Stitch’s Great Escape (Magic Kingdom)
  • Agent P’s World Showcase Adventure (Epcot)
  • IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth (Epcot)
  • Star Wars: A Galaxy Far Far Away (Hollywood Studios – stage show)
  • Primeval Whirl (Animal Kingdom) — seasonal

Effects of Coronavirus on the Schedule

The hardest thing to determine regarding Disney World closures is how the current coronavirus situation will factor in. As it stands right now, everything regarding the park has been placed on hold, which includes planned shutdowns, refurbishments, and all other activities, including those that would normally be dealt with after-hours. Although it’s impossible to determine when these things may kick back into gear, several refurbishments and closures have already been delayed.

How a VIP Tour Can Help After Reopening

With so many travelers being cooped up for days, weeks, or maybe even months at a time, it’s very likely that Disney World will be one of their first major vacation spots. If you want to reduce the time you spend in line and gain other advantages, then you should consider signing up for a Disney VIP tour. A private tour guide will help you plan an itinerary, skip long lines, book Disney hotel reservations, find your favorite characters, discover restaurant hotspots, and much more.

Changes You Might Expect After Reopening

Even once the country has been given the all-clear and Disney World has been reopened, your first visit may feel a bit strange. The good news is that Disney is extremely health-conscious, which is exactly why they led the way by closing long before many others had made the decision. Although most of the refurbishments and Disney World closures most likely won’t be happening as originally planned, you can expect to see immediate changes that help ensure everyone’s safety.

Stay Connected for Disney World Updates

News about the coronavirus and how it’s affecting businesses – including Disney World – are occurring on a daily basis, which makes it important to stay up-to-date as much as possible. If you want to keep up with planned changes outside of what you hear on the news, there are three important options you have – the Disney website, newsletter, and phone app. This way, you’ll be fully aware of reopening plans, new health and safety features, and other related news.
