Steps to Disney World Vacation Planning — Why Fall and Winter?

Summer is rapidly ending, which means that you only have a few more weeks before school starts, and your life becomes frantic with supply lists, sports schedules, and play dates. While you still have some time before the madness begins, now is the perfect time to start your Disney World vacation planning.

Planning the perfect Disney World Vacation in fall and winter starts here.

Set Up a Disney Account

This may sound crazy, but your first step to planning a Walt Disney World Vacation is to register an account at the Disney website. You will need to set up an account for each of your family members who will be going with you on the Disney World trip. Though you may not be excited about setting up an account with the Walt Disney Company but consider your account as a gatekeeper account to the whole Walt Disney World Resorts experience.

You won’t be able to access hotel rooms, reserve a spot at table service restaurants, or reserve Lightning Lanes passes without an account. If you are taking children on your trip to Disney World or Disney Hollywood Studios, you can register them. However, encourage the adults in the family to set up their own accounts. You can connect all your accounts together after registration. Once you have an account, you’ll be able to look at all the Fall and Winter dates, events, and fun for the theme park in one location.

Get the My Disney Experience App

Your next step to Disney World Vacation planning is to download the My Disney Experience App on your phone. The app is available on iPhones and Android. This app allows you to order mobile food, check wait times, order park tickets, reserve restaurant spots, and a lot more.

You can even view all your Disney photos on the app. If you’re staying at a Disney resort as part of your vacation package, you can check to see when shuttle buses will arrive at your resort. Think of the app as your electronic guide for all things Disney, not just for the fall and winter but year-round.

Figure Out the Best Times to Go

Disney World Vacation planning begins in earnest with narrowing down times to visit the park. There are advantages and disadvantages to each season of Disney, and you need to pick the time of year that works best for you and your family. Many people love to visit Disney World in the spring and summer because of school vacations and water parks visits. However, fall and winter are a great time to visit for several reasons.

First, a look at the crowd calendars on the Disney World website will tell you the park becomes far less crowded after Labor Day. Even Disney Springs is less crowded in the fall. You will be able to reserve meals at a full-service restaurant more easily, and the lines for all of the great attractions will be shorter.

Second, the Florida weather becomes cooler in the fall and winter. In July, the average daily temperature in Orlando is 92 degrees–but it feels like it’s over 100 degrees when you add in humidity. By comparison, temperatures in Orlando in October are in the low to mid-80s, and the humidity is not as big a factor. If you decide to visit Disney World in the summer, you may want to do early theme park entry, so you are walking during the coolest part of the day.

In addition to the heat and humidity, another issue with summer weather that Disney parkgoers don’t experience in the fall is thunderstorms. You may not know this, but Florida is the lightning strike capital of the United States, partly because it is common in summer in Florida to have afternoon thunderstorms.

By traveling to Disney World in the fall or winter, you will have lower humidity and far fewer thunderstorms to deal with. Summer is also hurricane season. While Orlando is not located on the Gulf or Atlantic, tropical systems can wreak havoc statewide.

Special Disney Events

Also, there are special events you and your family may love in the fall and winter. Beginning in August through Halloween, Disney World celebrates Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. There are all kinds of special foods, shows, parades, and other nighttime fun events during the fall your children or grandchildren will love.

One of the highlights of late fall and winter, and the reason people visit the park in November and December is the Merry Christmas Party held throughout the Disney World Resort. Everything is decorated, and there are special events park-wide, which means it’s the perfect time to buy a park hopper ticket so you can see it all. For many families, spending Christmas at Disney World is a once-in-a-lifetime event. Tickets for Christmas events sell out quickly, so if you want to visit the area during the Christmas holidays, you need to talk to a travel agent as soon as possible.

Not excited about kid-themed parties? Epcot has you covered. Late summer and fall usher the International Food and Wine Festival that runs from July through mid-November. You’ll be able to sample food and beverages from all over the world at this exciting adult event. There are great concerts as well, with some of the best live music the world has to offer–all in one location. You’ll want to reserve your tickets early, because this event regularly sells out, especially on the weekends.
