Why did Poseidon’s Fury close at Universal?

As you may be aware by now, Poseidon’s Fury at Universal Studios’ theme park in Orlando had its last hurrah and closed permanently on May 9th. Poseidon’s Fury had a very impressive 24-year run, but it’s always sad to see a popular attraction leave the park. Many people have asked us why the ride has closed, so we’ve decided to dedicate a little time to say goodbye to this wonderful water battle adventure.

What Was Poseidon’s Fury Like?

Since opening in 1999, Poseidon’s Fury has impressed millions of Universal Studios guests with its incredible visuals and engaging story. In this walking special effects experience, you head to the lost continent of Atlantis and get caught up in an epic battle between Poseidon and the evil Darkenon. A live actor leads you through the adventure as fireballs burst around you, lasers fly in every direction, and water bursts upward until only one of these gods is left standing.

Why is Poseidon’s Fury Closing?

Poseidon’s Fury has always been a fan favorite, but the truth is that it’s definitely starting to show its age. It closed for quite a while during the pandemic and never seemed to regain its former glory after reopening. The special effects are still impressive and have been revamped multiple times, but they simply don’t compare to other, more modern attractions. It seems that Universal Studios finally decided that it was time to replace the attraction with something bigger and better.

What Will Replace Poseidon’s Fury?

The question, of course, is: what could that bigger and better thing be? So far, Universal Studios has stayed silent on the subject. This isn’t unusual. They often keep their future plans to themselves, sometimes letting rumors fester even after construction has begun.

The online rumor mill has been chomping at the bit at the possibility that a Legend of Zelda attraction will replace it.

Could It Really Be a Zelda Ride?

Super Nintendo World is the only confirmed area of the park’s Epic Universe opening in 2025. Sadly, it’s all speculation at this point and probably not true.

While the area’s current mountainous design does lend itself to a Link adventure, this doesn’t mean anything since any new Nintendo ride would likely be started from scratch.

Will It Be Part of Epic Universe?

Many people have also speculated that Poseidon’s Fury’s replacement will be connected to the Epic Universe in some way. However, this rumor often goes hand-in-hand with the Zelda rumor. As of right now, Super Mario World will feature attractions for Mario, Donkey Kong, and most likely Yoshi. It would actually be strange if there was an Epic Universe ride that wasn’t attached to the other areas, but nothing’s impossible.

How Does World Class VIP Feel About the Closure?

As frequent guides and huge fans of Universal Studios, we’re always a little sad when any attraction is shut down. Most of us have experienced Poseidon’s Fury multiple times, and we’ve always found it fun and exciting. That being said, we agree that it was probably time to move on. The attraction simply doesn’t have the same impact that it once had. And we’re really excited to see what new adventure appears in its place.
