A Brief History of TRON

This Disney classic was released in 1982 and starred one of the biggest movie stars of all time, Jeff Bridges. In the movie, the character of Kevin Flynn is accidentally transported into the digital world of computers. Once there, he finds an oppressed society where contestants are forced to fight, typically with the use of lightcycles and throwing discs. The movie was an amazing feat of technology and became a cult favorite.
Next Step in TRON Series
In 2010, Disney went back to the digitized world with TRON: Legacy. This movie picks up nearly 30 years in the future where Flynn’s son has become a kind of tech saboteur. After being drawn back to the TRON arcade game where his dad had disappeared, Sam Flynn is transported into the same world. The next step in the TRON series is planned for 2021. Plot details haven’t been officially released yet, but it’s said to be a continuation rather than a reboot. At this point, creating a Disney rollercoaster around the franchise seems like a no-brainer.
TRON Lightcycle Run
Even in the original movie – which has often been called the predecessor to today’s CGI-animated films – the lightcycles looked fantastic and allowed for an exciting action sequence. For the TRON rollercoaster, visitors will climb aboard their own lightcycle and move at nearly 60 miles per hour as they go on their own digital adventure. This exhilarating ride is sure to quickly become a fan favorite.
Grand Opening Timeline
As one of the most anticipated Disney rollercoasters in the company’s long history, Disney wants to open the TRON Lightcycle Run attraction as soon as it possibly can. When the coronavirus hit, many fans were probably under the assumption that construction would be halted. While it was delayed for a bit for the sake of health and safety, construction has begun again, and the opening date is still set for 2021. Of course, the virus could cause more delays, but it doesn’t seem likely at this point.
