Changes made to Disney meet and greets.

People who have visited Disney World over the years typically expect certain things to always remain a reliable constant – specific events, exciting rides, delicious food, glorious hotels, and character meet and greets. This year, the COVID-19 pandemic reared its ugly head and caused an extended shutdown of the park, followed by some tried-and-true norms to either be momentarily shuttered or altered until further notice.

The Disney meet and greets weren’t immune to the unfortunate effects of COVID-19. Although certain restrictions have loosened up in Orlando, Disney World has been operating its reopening in a careful, cautious manner because the health of their guests are of utmost importance.

What exactly does this mean to the Disney meet and greets? Let’s take a look at what you can expect, along with other precautions that are being taken to keep guests safe.

Meet and Greets Temporarily on Hold

A huge part of protecting yourself from the coronavirus involves not getting too close to people when you can avoid it. Disney meet and greets, of course, have always required close, personal engagement between characters and fans. To avoid taking any chances, even with characters who would be completely covered in a costume, Disney decided to temporarily halt all meet and greets.

Character Viewings Have Replaced Them

Even though meet and greets aren’t occurring in their original state, Disney World understands that seeing their favorite characters is an important part of a visitor’s experience. Therefore, they’ve switched to a few different viewing spots where that opportunity is still possible. You won’t be able to get very close to them, but as always, they’re definitely a sight to see.

Here is where you can find them:

  • Magic Kingdom – You’ll see a cavalcade of Disney characters driving along the parade route.
  • Animal Kingdom – Take a look at the waters in this area and you’ll see some characters sailing around.
  • Epcot – At the World Showcase, processions of Disney characters will show up from time to time.
  • Hollywood Studios – You’re very likely to see characters riding around in motor vehicles at various spots.

Other Guidelines for Coronavirus Protection

Disney has always gone to great lengths to ensure the safety and health of their employees and visitors. As plans were made for Disney World to reopen, they decided to not only follow Florida’s coronavirus guidelines, but to also take their own precautions. By following a few simple rules, visitors can have an amazing time while remaining safe.

Advanced Reservations Only

The coronavirus spreads more easily when people are huddled together, which often happens as crowds of visitors are waiting to purchase tickets. To prevent that from happening, all reservations to the park must be made in advance, which can be done either over the phone or on their website. If you sign up for a third-party Disney VIP tour, they can help you with that.

Social Distancing Mandate

The most effective deterrent against the virus is to stay away from people whenever possible. Throughout Disney World, you’ll see that lines to rides, restaurants, and other areas are marked off in 6-foot increments to help ensure social distancing. They’ve also temporarily halted the Fastpass+ program so they can use those designated areas for lines, too.

Face Mask Requirement

Face masks have been shown to help stop the spread of the virus because they block expulsion of droplets that carry it into the air. You must wear a mask in all parts of the park except while sitting down and eating, in addition to designated relaxation zones. If you forget to bring a mask, you can purchase a Disney-themed one once you arrive.

Temperature Checks

A good indicator of someone who’s been infected with the virus is a raised temperature. This will be checked upon arrival and any visitors with a temperature above 100.7 degrees will not be permitted inside the park. Cast Members (workers) who test above the threshold will be sent home as well.

Hand Sanitizer Stations

Hand sanitizer, which kills viruses and bacteria on contact, is very effective at stopping the spread. You’ll find hand sanitizer stations set up throughout the park, so feel free to indulge yourself whenever you see one. If you notice an empty station, let the nearest Cast Member know.

Improved Cleanings

Disney World has always prided itself on the cleanliness of its park. In order to prevent the coronavirus from remaining on surfaces and possibly spreading to a visitor, they’ve set up additional cleaning routines for the staff. This includes a particular focus on high-traffic surfaces.
