What are some Disney World Refurbishments going on now?

With the pandemic disrupting many operations and tourist sites, it is normal to feel uncertain about where you can go or what to expect from different places. While Disney World may have had to close down temporarily due to lockdowns and quarantines, the park reopened its doors in the second half of 2020 and is now welcoming guests once again. That said, various safety protocols and guidelines have been set in place to prevent the risk of infection and ensure the welfare of all visitors.

Given all the events that have occurred due to the pandemic, you may be wondering about the status of different Disney World refurbishments. The temporary closures have undeniably led to schedule changes and delays, thus causing reopening dates for rides or attractions to be moved around. If you are planning a trip to Disney World soon, you naturally want to know about all the closures and refurbishments scheduled on your visit. The last thing you want is to get excited and giddy, only to find out that your favorite ride is closed at that time.

Disney World refurbishments are not uncommon as the theme park is constantly making necessary repairs and renovations to maintain their rides and attractions. While it can be disappointing to see some areas of the park closed down, refurbishments are necessary for safety and enjoyment. If you have your eyes set on a date next month, checking out what rides are closed for refurbishment will be useful. Read on to learn all about the theme park’s schedules and plans for March 2021!

Disney World Refurbishments for March 2021

The list of Disney World refurbishments can be challenging to get accurate since the theme park may sometimes make last-minute schedules or extend construction time if deemed necessary. Some attractions have also been closed for safety reasons, especially with the pandemic raising more concerns about health risks. That said, here are some refurbishments to take note of for March 2021 to ensure you still get the VIP Experience during your visit:

Hall of Presidents

The famous Hall of Presidents found in Liberty Square was closed in the latter part of January 2021, and based on the park’s official website, the attraction is closed until further notice. The refurbishment was made with no prior announcements to avoid issues and controversies. Since the site was closed quietly, not many are aware of the changes planned for the attraction, but many assume that a figure of President Joe Biden will likely be added.

Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover

Initially, Disney World closed down the attraction for downtime, but up until now, the refurbishment continues to be ongoing. As of February 15, 2021, the refurbishment is scheduled to extend until March 1, but there is always the possibility of further extensions. Some speculate that the attraction will be finished before October 1 since this marks the 50th anniversary of the park, but again, the exact reopening date is still not set in stone.

Blizzard Beach

If you are planning to go to Disney World sometime during March, the good news is that the Blizzard Beach water park is set to reopen on March 7. The maintenance periods during which the parks are closed for refurbishments typically occur from September to March since these are considered off-demand seasons. That said, expect new policies for Blizzard Beach visitors once it reopens as the park tries to maintain everyone’s health and safety.

Walt Disney World Railroad

The Walt Disney World Railroad has been closed since 2018, and unfortunately, the attraction will likely stay closed by March this year. While the train may not be operating at the moment, you can still take a photo against the beautiful backdrop in the Fantasyland station. Another reason for the extended closure has to do with the Disney World construction for the TRON Lightcycle Power Run ride, which overlaps with some of the train rails.

Mad Tea Party

The Mad Tea Party is scheduled to close on February 22 for refurbishments. However, the ride will only be unavailable for a short time since the closure is merely regular maintenance. As such, expect the ride to be back by March 5 in case you were planning on hopping on one of those giant teacups!

Swiss Family Treehouse

If you were looking forward to climbing up the Swiss Family Treehouse and get some of the best views of Magic Kingdom and Adventureland, take note that the treehouse will be undergoing refurbishments from March 12 to 25. Thus, try to schedule your visit for other dates in March so you do not miss out on the chance to explore the treehouse.

Even with all the refurbishments and construction projects taking place, you can still get the best experience in the theme park, so make sure to get a Disney VIP Tour to maximize the fun!

Temporary Closures in Disney World

Due to health and safety concerns, Disney World has opted to close some of its attractions and rides in the meantime. Most of them have remained closed since March last year and will likely remain as such while the virus continues to pose a threat. The following attractions have been suspended until further notice:

  • Character Meets
  • Frontierland Shootin’ Arcade
  • Let the Magic Begin
  • Advanced Training Lab
  • EPCOT Forever
  • Disney World Monorail
  • Disney Movie Magic
  • Star Wars Launch Bay
  • Voyage of the Little Mermaid
  • Festival of the Lion King
  • Finding Nemo: The Musical
  • Beauty and the Beast Live
  • Mickey’s Royal Friendship Faire
  • Festivals of Fantasy Parade

Disney World 50th Anniversary Plans

As you may have noticed, Magic Kingdom has many ongoing Disney World refurbishments as it will serve as the park’s centerpiece for its upcoming anniversary. Some refurbishments will only last a short time to make minor and small improvements, whereas others will be more extensive, so the reopening dates have yet to be clarified. With that said, you may be curious about what Disney has in store for its special anniversary this year.

Dubbed as the World’s Most Magical Celebration, Disney World’s 50th-anniversary celebration will begin on October 1 and continue to run for 18 months. Since the park is currently operating at a limited capacity of 35%, less visitors may enter the park at a time. The extended run of the event will thus help prevent congestion and regulate the crowds.

On February 19, 2021, Disney World teased a few details on the upcoming celebration and what the park has in store for everyone. According to the official announcement, various Disney World attractions and sites will receive special upgrades that will sparkle all day, even when the sun goes down. The term EARidescence was made to describe what guests will see in the park once the festivities begin.

One of the anniversary highlights includes a makeover for the iconic Cinderella Castle, which was recently renovated. The castle will be repainted to include some golden bunting and an anniversary crest; then, different effects will be added to help the castle sparkle at night. Your favorite couple Mickey and Minnie Mouse, will also be donning new outfits to host the event. With all the big festivities coming, you may understand why the refurbishments seem to be at a peak right now.
