King Kong is, without a doubt, one of the most universally known and adored characters in all of cinema. Even when he’s terrorizing a city or putting a young woman in danger (yes, he has a soft spot for her, but still…), there is something endearing about the character that has lasted for an incredible nine decades.

This giant gorilla isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and he is once again being celebrated at the Skull Island Reign of Kong adventure at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Today, we thought we’d explain a few things about the Skull Island Reign of Kong attraction and maybe even give you a little insight into this fantastic movie monster.

The Legacy of King Kong

King Kong was immortalized forever way back in 1933 when an ambitious black and white movie appeared in theaters and wowed audiences with its portrayal of a giant gorilla who was very clearly the true king of the jungle. Since then, we’ve seen multiple iterations by various writers and directors, along with multiple attractions throughout the years. The most recent attraction, Skull Island Reign of Kong, has been scaring and thrilling attendees for nearly three years.

Journey Into a Prehistoric Jungle

A big part of what makes Kong so incredible is the prehistoric world that the attraction has created in such great detail. In addition to King Kong himself, you’re treated to sights and sounds all around you that could very well have your heart beating hard and fast. These chest-pounding visuals and sound envelope you through much of the Skull Island Reign of Kong experience. Even waiting in line presents you with an awe-inspiring experience that you’ll remember long after it’s over.

The Eighth Wonder of the World

When King Kong was first developed, it was clearly based on an extinct genus of ape called Gigantopithecus, which are likely to have been the largest primates that ever walked the Earth. These huge creatures stood at just under 10 feet and weighed as much as 1300 pounds. To make Kong into the Eighth Wonder of the World, the original film’s creators more than doubled this size, making the great ape 24 feet tall. The Skull Island Reign of Kong version is a bit taller, clocking in at around three stories.

Prepping for the Future of Kong

The future of King Kong certainly appears to be bright and it’s not just because of the success of Skull Island Reign of Kong. Last seen in the Kong: Skull Island movie in 2017, the largest primate – real or imagined – is now a part of a shared monster movie universe that has also seen the creation of two Godzilla films. The success of these three films has made way for the next film in the series, Godzilla Vs. Kong, which will see the two go head to head. This movie is set to be released in 2020, which is likely to result in a newfound love for the Skull Island Reign of Kong attraction.
